Dr. D’s Pet Packages July Review

Hello Dog Lovers!

It’s been a busy week! Not only do I have a review of Dr. D’s Pet Packages for you today, but a tidbit of exciting news as well! My parents have just adopted a 12 week old black Labrador Retriever puppy which they plan to name Pepper! You will be seeing a lot more of her in the future as I explore Puppy Development in future posts.

And now, what you’ve all been waiting for…. Dr. D’s Pet Packages!

Dr. D’s Pet Packages are a subscription service for dogs-similar to others I’ve reviewed- but with some key differences!

Dr. D refers to co-founder, Dr. Deanna O’Neil, a Veterinarian in Southern California who created Dr. D’s Pet Packages with help of long-time friend, Missy Mannila. Unlike traditional pet subscription boxes, Dr. D’s products are hand picked and personalized for YOUR pet. The level of personalization is abundantly clear in the effort put into the packaging and letters sent with the box. (More on that later!)

Review Main Picture

Dr. D’s has Pet Packages for both cats and dogs, and offers customers Health or Happiness focused boxes. Dr. O’Neil was kind enough to send me a Happiness  Pet Package, which retails for $29- free of charge to review. While I was happy with the box, I think Dr. D’s strength lies in their Health Pet Package (Retailing a $49 US) that contains 6-8 hand picked premium products. While I would have loved to review one of these boxes, I can understand that it is costly to send to a blogger. That being said, I’m going to praise the Health Pet Package anyway because I think it’s very unique!

If you’re a pet parent with a furkid who has allergies or health problems you know how difficult it can be to find the appropriate products and treats. Other pet subscription boxes don’t have the ability to cater to individual pets’ needs, and thus send all customers the same products. Dr. D’s is unique because when you sign up for one of their boxes they ask you a number of questions to better understand your particular situation. I accidentally  filled out the form for the Health Pet Package when I was sending Dr. O’Neil my contact information, and I can tell you it’s pretty thorough. They ask about existing conditions(arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, etc.), your pets likes and dislikes, and more. The best part about this system is that there is a registered Veterinarian selecting the products for your dog. I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say that having a professional selecting my dog’s treats is very comforting.

Now, I’ll show you what came in our Happiness Pet Package.

First off, I was thrilled to see that this package did not take long to ship from the USA to Canada. I get really excited when I know there is mail coming for me and the fact that I didn’t have to wait too long was amazing.

Second, WOW! Dr. D’s takes the Personalization and Creativity Award for Pet Subscription Boxes thus far! The outside of the box had little paw prints all over it, the inside had the products contained in paw print cut-out paper, and a little medallion sticker with Bachaesh’s name on it! Also, the little notecard that came inside the package was not only personally addressed to Bachaesh and I, and  hand signed by Dr. O’Neil, but she also made sure to wish us a happy Canada Day!

Dr. O’Neil chose to base our July box on a Beatrix Potter theme (as Beatrix’s birthday would have been July 28). I grew up with Beatrix Potter dinnerware, books and movies. I still love her little characters to this day! If you’d like to relive your childhood-as I did moments ago-you can watch the intro to the Beatrix Potter movies here: Beatrix Potter

We received four products in our Happiness Pet Package.

TretbalTreat Ball

In our survey we were asked what sort of toys Bachaesh liked. Without a doubt, he LOVES treat balls. We fill his treat balls with his normal, everyday dog food that has been sitting in his bowl, ignored. Once in his treat ball, Bachaesh finds his food more appealing and will roll his ball endlessly, and woof at me when it is time to refill it. This “Tretbal” by Pet Projekt is BPA, Lead, Cadmium and Phthalate free, as well as non-toxic. It is made of natural rubber and is very durable. You can fill this ball with treats or peanut butter for hours of fun. It has a retail value of $8. This ball is, however, made in China.

FoxJemima_puddle-duck[1]

As Dr. O’Neil points out in her note, Jemima Puddle-Duck was “saved from a sly fox by a courageous Collie and puppies from the farm.” Bachaesh can now play the role of hero by shaking this Hyper Pet Critter Skinz Fox til it dies a death only a stuffing-free fox can!

When Bachaesh was a puppy he swallowed a little bit of stuffing from one of the toys he tore open. After a few costly vet visits, a lot of discomfort on Bachaesh’s part, and having narrowly avoided surgery we vowed not to buy him another stuffed toy. Fortunately, he has ceased his chewing spree, but this stuffing free toy will still be warmly welcomed into the toy box. This squeaky toy has a retail value of $8.

Travel BowlthH7LVGYDW

If your pup is like Peter Rabbit and likes to snack on the go, then maybe you need a travel bowl! This Sierra Dog Supply Travel Bowl is a waterproof fabric pouch with a drawstring top. it can be used to carry food or for on-the-go water dispensing. I was not able to find a price for this product but based on similar products I would estimate its retail value to be in the $8 range.  You could pair this travel bowl with a Gulpy for ultimate travel convenience.

Lil Lovee220px-Pie_and_the_patty-pan[1]

Last but not least, we received Lil Lovee’s Blueberry Cobbler biscuits. These are salt and sugar free, and they smell delicious! Lil Lovee Pet Bakery grinds the rice and oat flour they use themselves, guaranteeing freshness! Each 8 oz bag has about 55-60 pieces, retails for $8, and contains: Rice flour, blueberries, honey, coconut oil, oats, unsweetened applesauce, canola oil and egg. Bachaesh wasn’t sure about these at first sniff, but after he bit into them they were his favourite! He loves these.

The  cost of a Happiness Package from Dr. D’s Pet Packages is $29, the value received in our box is approximately $32. The look on Bachaesh’s face when he tosses the TretBal across the room and dog food flies everywhere: Priceless.

I strongly suggest any Pet Parents with allergy suffering pets to explore the Health Package that Dr. D’s has to offer.

Currently Dr. D’s Pet Packages ships to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. There is free shipping on every order to the USA, Canada and Sweden.  Shipping to the United Kingdom is $4.99.  Shipping to Australia is $5.99. Also,10% of proceeds from any of the Dr. D’s Pet Packages go to help animals in need!

Thanks again to Dr. O’Neil for generously sending us one of her personalized Pet Packages. I appreciate all of the personal touches you included. They definitely made this review extra special!
